Haircut guide

Not sure how to ask for what you want? This quick guide covers clipper lengths, popular styles, first haircuts for little ones, and simple tips for talking to your barber so you leave the chair looking exactly how you hoped.

How to talk to your barber

The more we know, the better the result. A few simple things make all the difference.

  • Bring a reference photo. It's the clearest way to show what you want.
  • Use guard numbers when you can (e.g. "a 2 on the sides").
  • Mention how you style it at home so the cut works for your routine.
  • Point out cowlicks, scars, or problem areas up front.
  • Speak up early if something isn't right. It's much easier to adjust as we go.

Your child's first haircut

First haircuts are a big milestone. A little prep goes a long way toward a happy, tear free visit.

  • Talk it up beforehand. Describe the visit in a fun, positive way.
  • Bring a favorite toy, snack, or tablet to keep little hands busy.
  • Come well rested and fed; a calm, happy child sits best.
  • It's okay to sit them on your lap, whatever helps them feel safe.
  • Our barbers are patient with first timers. There's no rush.

Clipper guard lengths

Each guard number leaves a different length of hair. Lower number = shorter. A common ask is something like "a 1 on the sides, scissor on top."

  • #11/8"
  • #21/4"
  • #33/8"
  • #41/2"
  • #55/8"
  • #63/4"
  • #77/8"
  • #81"

Common haircut styles

A starting point for the conversation. Feel free to mix terms, like "a mid fade with scissor work on top."

Taper

Hair gradually shortens toward the neckline and ears. Clean and conservative, easy to maintain.

Fade

Sides blend from skin up to longer hair on top. Ask for a low, mid, or high fade to set where the blend starts.

Crew Cut

Short and uniform on top with neat sides - a timeless, low-maintenance classic.

Buzz Cut

One even, short length all over using a single guard. Simple, sharp, and fuss free.

Scissor Cut

Longer, textured length on top shaped with scissors. Great for natural movement and flexible styling.

Pompadour

Volume swept up and back on top with short sides. Bold and classic, needs a little product to hold.
